I´m going to Rwanda. I have a friend who´s living there and she says it´s really safe. But when I tell people where I´m going they just stare at me like I told them I planed to dress in all gray and go to sleep on the motorway...

The FCO say of Rwanda:
"The incidence of street crime, armed robbery or vehicle hi-jacking is low."

The FCO say of DR Congo:
"The collapsed economy, non-payment of military and public service salaries, and very high unemployment has led to a high level of crime. You should be alert to the risk of street crime and armed robbery at all times, including being targeted by armed gangs when driving."

Aren't you off to Congo soon Mike? ;)

Anyway, I have friends from Ghana and Gambia both of whom swear their patch is safest. Having looked at the various bits of travel advice I think I'd plump for Gambia as safest (I've never been to sub-saharan africa, on the to-do list).

I´m visiting a friend who`s been working and living in Rwanda for about 2 yrs. She says it´s safe and i trust her.

mike - "u will probably be injured/killed in rwanda" - how can you be so sure about that?

It´s interesting to see how people react when i talk about Rwanda, the country is SO stigmatized because of the war!

I havent been to either Rwanda or DR Congo, but Id have to say that neither of them are usually labelled "tourist-friendly" or "Safest country in Africa".... Ive been to Ghana and it was great. No recent war, no political turmoil and the people were amazing. As a young white gal travelling by myself, its nice to be able to say that I felt safe the whole time. Id definetly recommend it to anyone thinking of going to Africa.

Zambias Great, and it has one of the wonders of the world, Victoria falls. People are super, government is pretty stable and everything is very cheap. Also S.Luangwe nat'l park is arguably the best game park in the world. So fly into Lusaka head east for a safari and then south to see Livingstone!
