Cheapest islands are Molokai or Oahu (note: Oahu is the main island where everyone goes).

The most expensive islands are Maui and Hawaii (the biggest island in the Hawaiian island chain is also named Hawaii--confusing, huh?. Most just refer to it as "The Big Island").

I suggest Oahu, because basically there is nothing to do on Molokai, whereas there is a lot to see and do on Oahu.

P.S. The reason Molokai is so cheap relates to it having been the site of a leper colony 80 years ago. So many people just avoid it.

Enjoy.

Forgot to mention the island of Kauai--a middle-cost (meaning still expensive) choice. Beautiful place, but last time I was there I ended up in the hospital for three weeks (stupid rock climbing accident on my first day).

My wife and son loved the beautiful pool at the Hyatt, the Fern Grotto and the Waimea Canyon, though.

I'd second Kauai.. wonderful place.. not cheap though. If you are a camper you can sleep on the beaches..

We were in Hawaii (Maui and Oahu) for 3 weeks last summer for our honeymoon. Hawai'i is not cheap, all parts are expensive. I found O'ahu to be more expensive because there are more ways to spend money there. Shopping, tours, beachfront accomodation and so on. Maui is more natural beauty, which you can experience for much less. Accomodation can be pricey if you want beachfront and whatnot.

What is your vision of Hawai'i? O'ahu is very urban and American, not the Hawai'i I envisioned. Maui was better, except for that McD's, Walmart and Home Deport they have as soon as you leave the airport.
