Galapagos on a budget...possible?

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Galapagos on a budget...possible?

Well, i've decided i'm going to Galapagos no matter what. It all seems so expensive though. For those of you who've been there, i'd like to know if it's possible to snorkel and hop from island to island without having to get on a cruise...'cause, gosh, the least expensive i've found so far is about U$S 900 for 3/4 days.
Thanks! :)

hola mariposa,hi jaconn,

I did my Galapagos cruise on the Galapagos Legende, one of the big ships. The Vessel is one of the best, excellent maintained, very experient Guides.
I paid for the 8 day cruise appr.1100 US

I would recommend to both of you,fly to Baltra, there the ships start.
Look at the boats, maby you can get a last minute offer.
Compare prices for 5 or 8 days trips, the 8 days are mostly not much more expensiv the the 5 day trips.
If you go only for 5 days you will miss a few beautyful Islands.

When I was there I have seen several Boats I would not have entered for free.OK,since I crossed the ocean from Europa to the Caribbean
on a small Sailboot and still do Sailrepairs I'm very interested in Safety.
Dont forget, you get easy seasick on a small Motorboat then on a bigger one.
enjoy Galapagos

I forgot to tell you that you can't hop from Island to Island, because nobody is living on this Islands exept the animales.
You cant walk on your own, there are only guided tours.

Thanks so much for your replies everybody! I'll be checking those links out soon.
I was reading the Lonely Planet's "SA on a shoestring" and it has great info. They say that the 5 day cruises are really 3-day ones because you lose the first and last days travelling to and from, etc. there are a couple of islands that you can go to independently, but those are not the ones where all the wildlife is, so what's really the point, right?
I'll let you know what else i find. I'll probable be in Ecuador around June/July.
Thanks again!

I paid about £550 for an 8 day, 5* trip, best class of guide as it is worth it. If you are going to do it then save up that little bit more cos you'll regret it if you still spend a substantial amount and its crap. It was amazing, the snorkelling was something i never imagine i am ever gonna experience again. amazing, spend a bit more tho, extra 100 quid gets you a lot more i imagine
