I can't stand it anymore!!!!!Two weeks I'm looking around internet for information about tibet, travel permits, and how to get there,etc...And all the searchers lead to the same tour operator sites, sometimes the same site six times in one search!!!And the only good news about how to get a travel permit I found disappeared from the net in one day each time!!!!And the tour sites all throw around the same bullsh.t that is good money for them,as ''it is illegal to travel without signing a driver,a guide and a jeep'',while I saw some testimonies of travelers which prove it isn't true!!!!!I am so fed up with all this, the more I am because it makes it impossible for me to get real information!!!!
If somebody can help about it,of course I am very interested, and if someone has some magical power to make people telling truth,HELP ME!!!!

you sound terribly frustrated...understandable...you will get the same feeling if you try to get into bhutan!all inquiries will lead you to a couple of travel agents, appointed by the govt...so it is claimed!
anyway...this may be of some help to you:
there are ways to get into Tibet...but whatever way you do it...you need to get that "non existent permit" (you never get to see it anyway!!! with it, you travel in a group or as "one man group"...so to speak!!!
1. if you have time, take the K192/k193 route - from guangzhou to chengdu it takes about 40 hours with a price tag of 480 yuan for lower hard sleeper ticket. and from chengdu you can take the flight for 1500-2000 yuan (including permit which you have to get a travel agency);
2. you also can take flight from shenzhen to beijing and from beijing to chengdu.Depend on what time you come, sometimes the fare to beijing from shenzhen is just 350 yuan, and from beijing to chengdu is 400 yuan or so.
3. you can make similar arrangement from kathmandu through travel agent....
there is no other way for the moment...what other info do u want ?
anyway, once you get to Lhasa, you can move around in Tibet for as long as your Chinese Visa allows in Lhasa. But for ongoing trips throughout Tibet you have to get further permits in Lhasa - try those hostels, they have lists with fellow travellers who want to share the costs..
Yes, chinese gov made Tibet one of the more challenging places to visit I have ever seen!
I was there last march/05. I did the KTM-lhasa in a group of 2 (me and my girl). All arrangements were made in a KTM agency which contracted 2 guys of Tibetan side.
Unless one speaks chinese or tibetan, I'd never go there by myself because nobody (it is really rare) speaks english (I felt down and got 4 stiches in a hospital, if my travelguide hadn't helped me, i would be in trouble!)
Well, today is your lucky day..
I am sending a msg with his tibetan telefone, he lives in Lhasa. He can work by himself and arrange the permit (and speaks good english).
I am serious, it is the smartest way....
Hey, iv'e been having he exact same problem! can you poss pass me on the info? I would be eternally gratefull! Thanksxxxx
sorry Hannahwa, I am on vacation now and I dont have this info with me... (and there is no sent box in TP)...
please, ask mr Odysseas for him to forward my msg for you!
ok,I transmit,BUT there is a sent box in TP.Be kind with TP,the ennemies die
hehehehe.... thanks for the tip Odysseas!!!
Can someone pass the info to me as well? My brother and I are going to Tibet in August. We're flying from Beijing, so I will already have my Chinese Visa.
My brother had told me that when we take the plane ride from Beijing to Lhasa, we will automatically be considered a "group", and so we will not need a special Visa for Tibet. Is this true?
presently in KTM. I have a Russian visa for july. Want to go there through Tibet and China, but travel companies here making it sound either crazy expensive to go to tibet or impossible to go to there without returning back to KTM. Anyone have any suggestions? I not leaving Nepal until May 10 if able to go through tibet/china, later if going straight to Russia.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I am traveling in a group of two people.
