at brianod:

I'm rigth now watching a TV programme on Kasakhstan. Apparently it is possible to cross into Almaty (Alma-Ata), Kasakhstan (and from there into Russia) from Urumqi in China.

http://www.seat61.com/SilkRoute.htm confirms it.

If you have the plan to go to Tibet in July,

see the following link:
http://www.pintrip.com/english/tibet/

The organizer will help you with this because this activity is supported by the government of Tibet.

A friend recently came back from Tibet... he went to the base camp around Mount Everest. I don't know how he did it, but I do know he couldn't plan it till he got there. He didn't reserve anything, he just did everything as he travelled. It cost him a but though... ¥900,000 for 4 days (about $900 US), and that's not including flights.

...Good luck!

Quoting csfreixo

I did the KTM-lhasa in a group of 2 (me and my girl). All arrangements were made in a KTM agency which contracted 2 guys of Tibetan side......Well, today is your lucky day..
I am sending a msg with his tibetan telefone, he lives in Lhasa. He can work by himself and arrange the permit (and speaks good english).
I am serious, it is the smartest way....

cheers!

Hi there!
I am also looking for any info you can provide as I will be making the trip myself in September. I appreciate your info and time.

Cheers!

Actually it is not hard as everyones talk, right now lots of people go to Tibet by individual travel, just need a train or flight ticket with a Tibet entry permit,, and once arrive at Lhasa, can travel by their own, but for the unopened areas in Tibet, need to join a tour, such as Mt.Everest Base camp, most of travellers did the trip by renting a landcruiser valid for 4 tourists, and share the fee, even don't need to hire a guide.

But if entry Tibet from Nepal side, need to join a group, and your pre-individual china visa will be cancelled and change it to a group visa which mostly is valid for 15 to 21 days, Not allowed individual travel to Tibet from Nepal side.

Any questions, please leave a message for me,
