Johannesburg Airport (opinions needed!)

Travel Forums Africa and The Middle East Johannesburg Airport (opinions needed!)

Kathi20 has indicated that this thread is about South Africa

We bought a ticket from New Zealand to Joburg, and are thinking of booking the doemstic flight to Bloemfontein online, as it works out much cheaper and it will take us only 1,5hrs to get there and not 6hrs by bus.

the first thing I wanted to know:
is it true that the international and domestic part are very far apart from each other?

what is the passport/visa control like? is there a separate line for SA citizens and foreigners and are there usually looong queues?

are officers/people friendly at the airport? what about safety (personal/luggage etc.)?

what were your experiences in general?

thanks a lot for all your help
Kathi

since i just got back from joburg, lets see if i can help:

is it true that the international and domestic part are very far apart from each other?

>> not really

what is the passport/visa control like? is there a separate line for SA citizens and foreigners and are there usually looong queues?

>> yes, separate lines

are officers/people friendly at the airport? what about safety (personal/luggage etc.)?

>> very friendly and safe. they don't use dogs/animals like in new zealand & china to sniff at your luggage.

what were your experiences in general?

>> nothing to worry about!

JHB Queries

JHB had 2 terminals - but they are within walking distance and one can easily push one's trolly between the two.

Different queues for locals and foreigners - not normally a problem unless have a few flights all landing at once

Immigration usually friendly - regularly in and out myself, greet them and be friendly and you should have no problems.

Like everywhere else keep your witts about you and you should be fine

I concur with the above posts.
I have just flown in and out of JNB on 4 occassions.
As a foreigner I would recommend using the queue closest to the SA/African states counter as I have been checked at that counter when the "locals arrivals" are low or non existatnt.

People are very friendly and walk confidently out of arrivals and turn left towards domestic with your luggage on the trolley provided and just ignore the porters offers and transport offers.

Enjoy.

Thank you so much for your fedback. I've also contacted the airport directly (by email) and they have already responded to me!

I was just a bit concerned because I read a few (bad) things about the airport, but I guess there are always gonna be different opninions about things...

Thanks anyway!

my only complaint is that joburg airport doesnt make any announcements on any delay flights, boarding time and such. you have to repeatedly look at the flight board and your watch and be as alert as possible.

Hey Kathi!
I can only aggree what has been said before.. I flew the same route as you did, last year. It was no problem to get from one Terminal to the other one and the flight to Bloemfontein was a really quick one.
Well i hope you have a really great time there, because for me it was.
Greetings
