Myself and a mate are planning to visit Auz and NZ for a year with an aim to getting good work and not coming home. We also wanna go via Thailand and possibly (if things dont work out in Auz/NZ) try Canada for work.
I was wondering if you can give me some advice on what we needa be thinking about getting organised before we leave as I haven't done this before and dont really have anyone I know who I could ask.
I have about £5000 to spend.
any help is much apprecited
I dont know if this is any help and im just looking into it myself but there is a "work travel" company which helps you sort out things like that. They organise your visa, job, first week or so accomodation, set up bank account etc etc. Although im from the UK and i dont know if this applies elsewhere.
You are going to want to get a working holiday visa; as a pom you automatically qualify for it. That will only last you for a year however. If you want to stay longer than that then you will have to apply to the consulate to stay longer. I think that they work on a points system where you will get points if you speak English (not a worry for you obviously), are prepared to live outside of Sydney or Melbourne (as if you would want to live there anyway) and your work qualifications (based on whether Oz is short of people with your profession). As I don't know what your qualifications are, I cannot help much further.
A lot of backpackers find work there fruitpicking and working in bars etc.
Hope this helps.
