Ok, kicking off my trip next monday with Argentina, then headed to Uruguay for their Carnival and then down to Ushuaia in the hopes of snaring some sort of vaguely affordable cruses to Antarctica - Does anyone know if this is possible?
I really want to visit every continent on this trip and Antarctica is the only sticking point (for more on the trip you can check my website), but I'd appreciate any tips/recommendations for Argentina and Uruguay from anyone who's visited.
From all I've heard, there's just no such thing as an affordable trip to Argentina (of course depending on what you find affordable...). When I was in Australia, budget trips to Antartica were about 10 000 dollars for a week or so.... if you do find something more affordable, let me know; I'd love to do this trip and am planning to be in Argentina later this year (August through October)....
trips can be had for under $USD 3000. I haven't seen anything much cheaper than that. I know people who have gone with GAP Adventures. They have 10 days for around $USD 3000.
I know a guy who picked a cruise up last minute when he was down there. He paid around $USD 5000.
As for Argentina, it's very cheap.
Argentina is a very cheap country.
Travel on buses around the country if you want to see more than just Buenos Aires. And bus travel is cheap there in relation to the distances traveled.
Get the Buquebus ferry across to Uruguay from Buenos Aires. The must see places in Uruguay are Colonia, Punta Del Este and Montevideo (of course).
All on my lists of things to do.. I've found some cheap cruises (well cheap comparitively) but they cruise around the Horn and the glaciers off Chile but don't really touch on Antarctica.. I'm going to keep trying though, I'll let you all know how it turns out.
I made it to Antarctica! It was incredible but not cheap. The only bargains for Antarctica are for big cruises who don't assure you of chances to land so I splurged on a small cruise boat - and it was worth every single penny! Coolest place I've ever been.. now I want to go back.
Not many can add that to their travel log, that's for sure
