If you check the Australian consulate web site they will tell you excatly how much you need.
All ive done when getting working visas is borrow the money then get a proof of funds from the bank (says how much you have but doesnt show transactions cause they may get suss if it is put in all at once).
It may pay to hang on to this as it makes getting through customs a lot easier if they want to give you greif.

You don't need the funds to apply for or obtain the visa. The only place they check the proof of funds is at customs going into Australia. This is how it works: If you came to Oz on a one-way ticket and said you were staying longer than 6-months they require that you have at least $5000 in addition to funds for a return airfare. Do they check? Very rarely. And if they did and you had only $2000 they would still let you in. If you had a return ticket (and I'm assuming you do) and only had $2000 - $3000 Aussie dollars you would have nooo problem. The govt assumes that people eligible for the working holiday visa have a better than average chance of getting a job so they're not too concerned.

Just email if you need more help.

You can borrow the money, put it into your account, print out a statement then return the money to the owner. *IF* they do check for funds, it will be at the airport when you go through immigration. I have yet to hear of one person to have their proof of funds checked, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.
