Can anyone update me with the progress of the preparation for the Summer Olympic in Athens. Do you think all the sites will be ready on time for the Olympic, or it will be the first time in the Olympic history that the Olympic has to be delayed due to lack of facilities?
By all accounts, progress is at best borderline, and it's going to be a real struggle for them to finish. They've already had to scale back a number of plans and also cancel some projects entirely.
Wouldn't be at all easy for them to delay it so they they would probably try and go ahead anyway. Although they may have no choice. Don't know. Having said that, it wouldn't be first time that an olympics have started with some facilities still not finished, and people still working around the clock to try and get it done.
From what I know, from the mouths of the Greek Olympic Committee (I'm Greek myself), they say they will be ready. Just recently, there has been news that they are behind, which would be an embarrassing problem. Plus, too much money will be lost if the games were postponed. Not only by the airlines and hotels, but since everyone who lives in Athens is leaving because they don't want to be there during the Games, their money could be wasted. I suppose we wait and see. Hope this helped!
I think preparations are going ahead with no delays as such. The two problematic areas of the Olympic committee are the marathon route (widening of the road) and the cover of the Olympic stadium at present. Both display and minor works to a successful olympic games. Most of venues are complete and visible throughout Athens and what needs to be done is the finishing touch surrounding those stadiums which is in progress. The foreign press has more concentrated itself on the issue of security which I do not understand since Greece has always been peaceful in its Modern history and has not been involved in any recent wars or attacks to other nations, plus having one of the lowest crime rate in Europe.
