Hi, I am a young backpacker travelling with 3 friends to amsterdam this summer. We are budget travellers and will be spending all of our time in hostels. A bit of backround on the trip: we are going for 5 weeks, originally flying into London where we have a 3 night stay in london before we depart for Rome. Now, i would like to go to amsterdam for a couple nioghts and i know the only way this is feasible is to skip a few of the nights in London and do a quick plane flight to amsterdam. I have already been to London, but never Amsterdam. i want to know if this side trip will put a dent in my budget or if it will save me money in the long run because London is such an expensive city. I would also like to know the cheapest way to do roundtrip london to amsterdam. Also, is this side trip something that you would reccomend. thank you.

Traveling from London to Amsterdam can be done in a little bit more than a hour. There are several airliners like EasyJet, KLM, BA etc etc. If you have a lot of bagage and a little more time you can take the train from London to Harwich and there the ferry to Hoek van Holland and than the train to Amsterdam. Most cheapest way is by bus ; www.eurolines.com .

The city Amsterdam is I think cheaper than London although you can make it more expensive if you visit places like the Red Light District. There are several hostels in Amsterdam to stay. Just take a look at the internet for Amsterdam and I guess you will find the places you want to go to. All places can be find on the internet.

Ofcours you can go from London to Amsterdam and back and than to Rome but think about the possibility of traveling from London to Amsterdam and then south to Rome. You can fly cheap by www.transavia.com from Amsterdam to Rome but there are also some nice possibilties of traveling through Paris (france) by train of take a bus (long time traveling but cheap).

bjorn, do you think it's safe to say that also amsterdam is quite an expensive city?

You can also go by bus to or from london, from just outside amsterdam to the centre of london in a few houres, it can be worth it. especially if you fly from one of the airports outside london

and i must agree with bjorn, it can be nice to go from amsterdam over 'land' trough france towards rome..
