Hi folks. I hope there's some Literature/Film Students about. This is very much "off-topic" but Googling wasn't going to find me the answer...

I was having a conversation about films, and remebered I'd heard about this theory, that there are only something like 8 major storylines, ever, in all stories throughout history, be it plays, books, opera, films, etc and they can of course, be combined.

I'd heard it before, and wondered, what are they?

The few I could think of, (and all my examples are Shakespeare) were:

Doomed Love: Romeo and Juliet

Ambition (it can make you do bad things): Macbeth or Othello

Revenge: Hamlet, plus countless violent films

Does anyone know the rest, and can think of more contemporary examples?

I've been out of college for too long but wasn't hubris one of them?

Overbearing pride or presumption.

Oh I dunno. Hubris? Who-bris? Still, I hope somebody replies I am genuinely wanting to know these themes....

My brain cells don't get the exercise they used to.

I wasn't making that up, or I would have called it something funnier. I do, however (after re-reading your post) think it means the same thing as what you listed as ambition.

"There is nothing new under the sun."

Look up Joseph Campbell and his Hero myth and/or quest.
Good luck! :)

Check out 'The Hero with a 1000 faces' by Joseph Campbell. Didn't get a chance to get it yet, but it's been recommended by one of my lecturers in college.

As for stories, there's only 1!

Hero is challenged with one or more obstacles, he struggles to overcome the difficulties and in the end resolves the situation.
As simple as that, 3 act structure. Whatever you look at, fiction or documentary, is very much based on this structure.
Introduction of character, rising tension leading to conflict, Conflict is resolved. That's it!

Unfortunately, it gets forgotten very often and we end up with a flat piece that lacks emotional depth...

End of lecture (for now...)

{goes back to dreaming about becoming a film editor...}

I don't agree...what about Donnie Darko, there was little resolved in that.

What about social/political turmoil, like Crash?
