Check out 'The Hero with a 1000 faces' by Joseph Campbell. Didn't get a chance to get it yet, but it's been recommended by one of my lecturers in college
I googled Joseph Campbell and headed to the most brief and conscise summary of the hero Myth/Quest thing. Like how there's the hero, a different worlds, a mentor all that. On the summary I looked at, they applied it to Star Wars, which means nowt to me, but I could understand enough to adapt it to Harry Potter.
This fits the adventure story, but as Mim points out, there are some things that won't fit this.
Like Mim, I thought about Crash, (I went to see it twice last year) and cos its also not just one, but a load of different stories, it doesn't really fit into it, and there is no real hero.
