Has anybody done it, or know how to do it?

What form of transport did you take and was it much cheaper than a flight?

Yes it can and is done EVERYDAY! No problem, some people drive their own cars, most tourists/travellers use a bus or van. Rail travel is also available.

I took a bus/van combination from Bangkok. Most of the travel agencies in Bangkok have a menu board of available services - rides to Malaysia (usually Penang & Butterworth) are normal everyday events. Big switchover at Hatyai, Thailand (vans from different places transferring passengers.)

The bus/van route took a long time. Sometimes it is mostly bus (the photos advertising this service show a big bus with reclining seats) usually it is a combination. They were efficient in transferring passengers from one van to another - they did a head count to make sure no one was left behind - and a small free meal was provided too!

One way air travel to Malaysia to Bangkok is almost as expensive as round-trip. Compare the cost of round-trip and one way flights with several travel agencies before you commit.

There are some flim-flam outfits running scams on travel to Malaysia, usually in the Khao San Road area. I bought my ticket from a travel agency near the Beer Garden, Sukhumvit Soi 5. Bring a book to read, van can be cramped, they stop often enough for toilet breaks. If you are not an experienced traveller you may not know that you carry your own TP with you, some handi-wipes are good to have, and like most public transportation anywhere - keep your passport, money and valuables with you and not in your checked in bag!

Hey!!!I did a bus journey, Thailand to Malaysia and it was fairly painless and very cheap!I paid 500 Baht to get to Kuala Lumpur from was the usual scenario of regular changes from bus-van-bus and a lot of the typical waiting around at roadside shacks but the border crossing was simple as were all the transfers!I would say take the bus for the cheapest option, it wasnt such a bad journey!

You could also go by boat from Langkawi in Malaysia to Satun in Thailand, no problem.

from BKK u pay 900B to hatyai, and from Hatyai to KL RM40...if u want to skip overnight in Hatyai, time your departure from BKK such that u arrive by noon in Hatyai so that u can take the last bus out to KL.:)
