Now that I have signed up for my international hostel membership, I have noticed that the membership comes with free insurance. I havn't looked into it fully, but I am wondering if anyone else has used it, and soley it. Basically, I am wondering if I should get additional insurance as well as the free insurance, or if the hostel membership insurance is enough for my 4 month trip. Thanks guys!

I've never heard of this, I suggest you check out what the HI insurance covers you for in an emergency etc...

If your satisfied then go for it!, but insurance is very handy, I got about a grand a couple of years ago when my entire backpack was set on fire in Brazil!!

I just got my new membership and noticed that too. Of course, you have to sing up for it online and they give you the option of upgrading it.
Haven't used it yet, though...i'm thinking it should be good, otherwise HI would link their name to them, don't you think?

when my entire backpack was set on fire in Brazil!!

How did that happen? It must have been by accident, right?

I did a search for this, found some details on the HI America website.

Basic coverage, with maximum claim amounts:

· Daily allowance of US $70 while hospitalized $1,400
· Transportation costs of mortal remains $3,500
· Emergency dental treatment $ 100
· Accidental death $2,000
· Extra traveling expenses in emergency situations $1,250

To be honest, you might as well not be insured! The one thing you need to really cover when you're travelling is emergency medical expenses. $70 a day is not even going to cover a few injections, let alone emergency surgery, an airlift, etc.. A real travel insurance would have coverage in the millions of dollars for that item.

I know someone who went to the US, got severe appendicitis (sp?) while there and came home with a 6 figure bill. Thankfully, he had the insurance to cover it (though there was some difficulty in processing the claim). Things like this can happen to anyone and you need to be prepared.

Thank you guys! Looks like i'll be getting a bit extra insurance on top of the HI insurance.

Thanks again!
