Hey hope you lovely friendly people out there can help. Ok i have seen a post on here before about this subject, I have been looking for volunteer work around Asia and as you probably all know it's the same places that come always come up and man to go through the agencies is so expensive.
I have heard that you can go through the charitys themselves
and the money goes to them. For me this sounds great, the money these agencies ask for i cannot afford and i really want to help out.
I have travelled through most of Asia twice and really love everything about it.
So if you read this and know of anywhere let me know.

Getting work with a charity really depends how much time you can commit to and what skills you can bring with you. The advantage of going with an agency is that they can find meaningful work for people who are not suitable for the long term programs often ran by charities.

There are some agencies that do reinvest the money paid by you into the communities in which they work. You should be able to gauge the authenticity of the company by the information is on their site, key things to look for are: How much they are charging and specific details of recent projects, donations etc. Any trustworthy agency will have many referrals from previous volunteers that you can contact directly for more info. Good luck with the search.

Hey thanks for the replies. I do understand what you mean by checking the agencies and seeing feedback from other people. Of course always a good idea.
The thing is i do want to commit for a long time, maybe 6+ months. It's something that i really want to do, but obviously money is a issue. I have heard of organisations that you can get in touch with and not have to go through the agencies and the money goes direct to them.
I have done so many searches my head is spinning.
It's a shame because i really can't afford £3000+. Before flights etc, and i do understand that the agencies do all the work, but maybe i can do some as well.

£3000+ sounds incredibly expensive. For a six month stay I would expect to pay no more than £1000. You might want to check out www.idealist.org as they have a lot of valuable information about volunteering.
