I'm looking at taking the great train journey on the California Zephyr for the spectacular scenery it promises. Which direction is better - Eastbound from Emeryville (San Francisco) to Chicago, or Westbound from Chicago to SF? I don't want to miss the best views by passing them at nighttime. Any other advice about Amtrak US welcome. Thanks, all.
The spectacular scenary part is over the mountains of the Sierra Nevadas and over the mountains east of Salt Lake City. The boring part is through the long deserts of eastern Nevada and the long stretches of farmland across Nebraska and Iowa.
For this reason, the better way to go is west to east. During daylight you will cover the areas I mentioned (train leaves at 9 AM and goes over the Sierras that afternoon) and the long stretches are mostly during the night-time portion of the trip.
Thanks very much. I certainly will enjoy
