Hi there everybody, just a quick question which i hope someone could answer for me or point me in the right directions.

Ill be staying in Singapore and Hong Kong in May and absolutely have no idea about the places as ive never been before. I have heard many people talk about the large shopping centres in both places that sell almost anything you would want like in particular Electronics equipment, computers, visual entertainment, etc....

If anyone has been and can tell me where these places are i would appreciate as i wouldnt mind to kill some of those days i have in each place doing some gadget shopping :-)

Thanks....:)

Hi Daniel,

For Singapore go to Sim Lim Square for computer stuff and some electronics. Nearby (just a block away) is another complex (can't remember the name) with shops that sells mostly electronics.

The other place nearby is Funan IT Mall 6 floors of electronics etc. You can also go to the Mustafa Centre in Little India in Singapore, but they won't hassle, low pricing, but no bargaining. Sim Lim is the place to haggle - 10 floors, Cameras down low and as you up less camera more computer. Just make sure that you know what you want, brand, model and price at home converted to $SUD, don't be swayed by salesperson trying to sell you a different model or brand - this is when you get ripped off. If a shop tells you they don't have what you want, then walk, this is an old ploy to sell you what they want to sell you, it's amazing how things change when they realise you know something about what you want and that you won't buy anything else. As a rough guide before you go check out www.bargaincity.com.sg
Haven't been to honkers so can't help you there.

I would think that Funan is a better place for electronics and Sim Lim for IT products. Make sure that u know your stuff if you're buying stuff from Sim Lim to prevent yourself from being ripped off. Always compare prices and do your homework. :)

Thanks for your help everyone, ill be mostly looking for a laptop and/or portable mp3 to purchase and obviously not going to impulse buy as ill know basically what i want and how much they cost here in comparison and when converted to Singapore Dollars.

But ill be staying in Kowloon in HK, does anybody know of any other stores nearby in that area and Hong Kong? Thanks for any information given...;)

There are loads of shops/ markets in Kowloon selling laptops mp3's and cameras etc...
Just remember to haggle, do your research on the prices before you go there.
Get international garantees/plugs etc.....
If you do that you ought to enjoy the experience.

Check out this Singapore site

http://www.asia.cnet.com/

to have a good idea of the listed price (in SGD) of electronic products in Singapore. In Sim Lim Square and Funan centres, I think you should be able to get them cheaper then the prices listed in this site.

Have fun!

There're plenty of shops offering electronic stuff in Mong Kok, Kowloon. Just take the MTR and get off Mong Kok station, E exit, we locals also get things here.

PS I'm visiting Oz on WHV next week! ;)

Mong Kok in Hong Kong (Kowloon side) lots of shops some off the main street, locals shop there, often electronics are later models than in the tourist drag of Nathan Road. In my experience most people speak english some better than others but if you are a buyer they will always find someone who can understand what you want and help.

I once got lost on the outskirts of Mong Kok, couldn't find anyone who spoke english, then I spotted a Chinese guy in a 3 piece suit with a brief case so I approached him and asked in my best pidgeon english/chinese how to get back to Mong Kok station - He looked at me and said in a strong Aussie accent that he wasn't sure because he was from Sydney but would ask someone, he aked a few before he came back and said "Shit mate they are all Koreans who are working here"

Singapore has Sim Lim Tower, Funan Centre, Sim Lim Square, also try Peoples Park in China Town (3 side by side shopping centres separated by roads)has a few shops for software and some limited hardware, if you ask they can usually get it for you if they haven't got what you are after. Also as you wander around just off the tourist strips you will find the odd small shop.

It has always been my experience in both Hong Kong and Singapore that the shop keepers all want to do business and will try to sell you something - You only get ripped off if you haven't looked around and checked local prices, same as at home in Australia, for hardware check that you get an International warranty so that you are covered when you get back.

Good luck.

Prices of computer stuff are pretty competitive in Singapore. Check out the prices of stuff at Sim Lim Square at this URL: http://sg.hardwarezone.com/priceguide/

Shops in Sim Lim Square now carry price lists. You can go round these shops, get the price lists and compare the prices.

If you want to get electronic stuff at good prices, I usually go to
1. Lucky store at High Street Centre or Transit Road
2. Parisilk Electronics at Transit Road
3. Tay Nam Mui at Upper Serangoon Road
