I really don't think the French are very much different from Americans, Brits, Germans, Poles or Italians. Depends on the individual. Personally I used to complain about Germans until I met a few really nice German people (by the way, I'm German-American myself). One of the very nicest people I met recently in Sapa, Vietnam was a French national married to an American Veterinarian.

Compared to the Vietnamese, I find many Americans to be rude, selfish and self-centered. On the other hand, there are millions of friendly, generous and outgoing Americans as well.

Try to speak French as much as possible, if you are American then say you are Canadian, and develop a thick skin. Some people will be nice, some will be rude. Most will be rude and haughty. Enjoy Paris for the city, go to Nice (or anywhere in southern France) for the people.

it's really a strange idea to say that you're Canadian rather than from US...but as you're not the first to say that it may be frequent..

but it's really funny. Next time i'll see a canadian i ask him if he's not from US in fact.

I've had the same issue with rudness due to my French-canadian accent. But don't let it ruin you trip, there are alot of very kind people as well. Every country has it's jerks, so don't worry about it.

Even if you are french if you don't live in Paris, parisian is rude with you ;)

But don't care, everybody are not rude.

Be careful for price, Paris is really expansive.

I think the French are great!

As most posters noted, just try to speak some of the language, be polite, and you know what...a simple smile is always a pleasant way to convey friendliness.

I've found, that the more I try to speak French....the more they feel sorry for me, because I am trying so hard...(that almost evryone has been so sweet)

I'll be back in Paris this September. I'm so thrilled! I love the city...I love the culture...I love the people!

I was in Paris back in 2005, I believe the french are not rude just raised different (very nationalistic). My advise.. LEARN FRENCH. Even if they understand and/or speak english, they won't. Pay them there respects and pickup a few phrases, they will appreciate it. Paris has that big little city feel believe it or not, kind of like San Fransisco. HAVE FUN!!!
