Hi everyone,
I'm off to rio in 4 days (cant wait) and from there on a big trip round S. America. I have started on a doxyxycline course but being the dopey git i am (but i really dont think its my fault,it never is )i think have left too late to order the rest of the pills i need. Is it possible to buy doxycycline tablets in rio? and Whats the price of them over there?

Having read other threads it looks as tho i dont need to be on them for a vast majority of the trip anyway but wudnt mind getting some just in case.

Cheers guys!!

Hi

I do not know this medice, but you can find the medicine in Rio for malaria.

You do not need it here in Brazil in all main cities. You need only if you go to jungle, that is thousands miles from Rio.

Most of the anti-malarials, including doxycycline and chloroquine, are available over-the-counter in Central and South America. You should be able to find what you need in the major cities. They may not be available in the pharmacies in smaller towns. From what I have found through my searches, the price will be much cheaper than what you would pay in Europe or the US.

Right now, as jccosta commented, the whole of Brazil is considered a "no-risk zone".

It seems that the US is one of the few countries that still requires a prescription for anti-malarials. Some day we may wise up...
