I came out to Sri Lanka 2 weeks ago to do a volunteer project for 3 months. I am based in Kalutara and working in an orphanage and Tsunmai camp. Staying on my own with a host family. So far, all of the other volunteers are very young (18/19, I am 25) and came out in a group, so all know each other.
Feeling very isolated and alone, just wondering if there is anyone out here, nearby who would want to meet up for a drink? Or any advice? Would love to meet some like minded people, but the only other people seem to be overweight German couples!
Hope to hear from someone...!
LOL... I'm afraid you will find more overweight German Couples than like minded people 1:100...
...but fear not, I am sure they are around. Are you part of an NGO? If so have you tried liasing with them? Most volunteers head to Colombo for the weekends (Colombo people head out on the otherhand)where you will find restaurants, entertainment (not so brilliant really but still good) and other like minded people. Try networking at the Cheers pub at the Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo if you head this way. Its an english themed pub with lots of english folks, volunteers and expatriates alike. Great sunday Brunch.
Within Colombo a tuk tuk is an easy ride.. Dont'pay more than Rs. 100 for the first 2km or so. After than should be about Rs.20 per km.
Kalutara is not so far from Colombo - and you could even take a bus from Galle road to Colombo City. Lots of good hostels / small hotels down Hotel Road in Mount Lavinia which is a suburb South of Colombo. If you get off the buss at Mount Lavinia (on Galle Road) you can walk down hotel road.
Colombo is 20 to 30 minutes away in the traffic heading into the city.
