Hey im going to sydney soon but havn't got a bank account yet. Also I havn't got a tax file number. Is it much hassle sorting it out when I get there? Id feel better sorting it out face to face with someone rather than online. Just me being paranoid about getting things done online, especailly when its invloving my money.
Any help please?
have a look at that site, should help you with your questions
I tried getting a tax file number offline as well, but the tax office is completely unwilling to help there. They point you to some computers at their office with IE set up on it (for extra lack of security - although I guess it's better than doing it in a random internet cafe), and if you press them really hard, they might give you some paper forms which will take them six to eight weeks to process (iirc) and require a lot more paperwork next to it. The people who you can talk to at the tax office lack all knowledge and even awareness of information security, unfortunately. (And you're definitely right to be 'paranoid', patience - far too few people are.)
That said, the actual process of getting a tax file number online is pretty swift and painless - but if I wouldn't have had my laptop with me, I don't know if I'd gone through with it.
You'll find opening a bank account in Oz far less painful than it is the the UK. But you will find keeping it open far more painful than you are used to. Australian banks charge for EVERYTHING.
You can do your tax file number online as soon as you land. If you try and do it before it won't work because they match your WHvisa entry to the tax office site. They'll mail your number to you quite quickly, but as long as you have applied you can begin work immediately. Bank account? Take your passport to the ANZ bank and open an access advantage account. Its for students so is low on fees. The tax office staff deliberately play dumb to steer you online because thats the point of having an online service.
