Am I killing myself if I were to do the Transsib in December? Will I freeze my butt off? Welcome advice from anyone who's done it before.

Cheers!

The train is heated and the blankets and beds are surprisingly cosy, so no need to worry about when you are on the train. Take your shoes off before you walk into your cabin - that way you won't track in water and mud and snow and muck.

In general, in winter you have to worry more about not getting too hot on the train (the often superheat the carriages beyond belief) than getting cold, although teh sudden change in temperatures when you get off at longer station stops to buy stuff/have a quick wander can hit you hard.

Providing you've packed well/got layers/good hat etc for the places you stop off, you'll be abvsolutely fine.

December isn't normally even particularly cold.

Hi Lyn,

Initially we were thinking of doing it in Dec but i've read in some websites that it's cold and because we are stoppin over at UB, Irkutsk and Baikal for about 5 days each place, we're having second thoughts and may do it in March 2007 instead.

When exactly will you guys be on this journey?

Hey Not Lost,

I've never done it, but I'm just thinking that more than the cold, you should concern yourself with what the heck are you going to see?? It might not be that cold in December, but the views from the train would be miserable - nothing but barren steppe, and with minimal sunlight. There won't be any locals around, because they'll all be inside staying out of the cold and the dark. It seems like a pretty long train ride, so you should at least enjoy the views.

Although maybe my priorities aren't straight - I guess if you end up making friends on the train, you can have a pretty good time playing cards and drinking.

Either case, have fun!

Hey Not Lost

We are a group of 5 and definately doing it in Dec (10/12/06 - 10/01/07) - its the only time we can get off work for a month plus I reckon we have to experience Siberia in winter. I am a bit worried about the cold, having never experienced more than -10, but we'll buy some warm kit in Beijing...
