Hi. I'm thinking of going to Rome in September for 6 days and looking at hotels on the web they seem to be really really expensive. My budget is 500 for two people for 5 nights, which I thought was reasonable enough, but it seems to be difficult to get somewhere decent. I don't think I'm being too fussy, I basically want a clean, safe, central double room. If anyone has suggestions I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Have you looked at hostelworld.com - you can specify that you want a hotel not a hostel. Also have a look at expedia.co.uk, this often gives good hotel prices.

You might try to find Ancient Rome B&B. I booked a room for 95 Euros / night during high season through venere. Haven't stayed actually been there to fulfill my reservation yet (this summer) but it seems pretty central (5 minutes walking to Trevi fountain and the Colosseum...and 15 minutes walking to Termini.)

Now I'm biased for sure, but the budget accommodation area on Travellerspoint (http://www.travellerspoint.com/budget-accommodation-en-ci-1067.html for Rome) breaks down the accom into hostels, budget hotels, b&bs etc. and is very popular :)
