Leaving for Belize (2 weeks vacation) next thursday and suddenly I realised I don't know what to do with the money issue! All in cash? VISA-card? travellers checks? how much?! I don't feel safe walking around with a load of cash, but I wan't to have some handy if something comes up. Maybe I should just bring a load of cash and stuff it in my bikini top ..

Though I haven't been to Belize, I have been to other Caribbean islands and have always had good luck with travellers cheques, a small amount of ready cash and a credit card. BUT, we ran in to major trouble with travellers cheques in Panama - including Panama City. Our bank issued VISA cheques - not American Express. Every bank we went to would cash AmEx only - NOT VISA. We finally had to a cash advance off a credit card. (We were down to our last $10 in cash and the banks were closed for 3 days over Carnival.)

It has since been recommended that we should skip the travellers cheques and consider a credit/debit card for ATM withdrawls. Someone will know more about the types that don't have high fees or finance charges. But, with the information i have read in many other threads - go with a bit of cash and a card.
