Hey,

Im a newbie and not sure if this is a thread that has been done to death but was just wondering where is the best place you have spent New Year? And any recommendations or are there places to avoid?:)

I have never spent New Year abroad but have spent many a birthday on a plane and in Thailand. Also is it hard or "weird" spending Xmas away from home travelling?

Madrid!

Everyone is at plaza del sol and it's really crowed but so nice.. And I loved being away with new year, it was much more fun. And for the 'oww happy new year' textmessages to home are fine aswell.

What I heard about christmas away, that you quite easily meet up with other people traveling and that they become your family feeling for the evening.

How about New York???Personally I find a lot of hype over the whole New Years Eve thing...Im not a fan, I prefer to get together with a few drinks....a couple of friends just spent new year in Oz and they had a fab time, theres was loads of them got together in Sydney, it was all fellow travellers and they threw a big party and thought it was great!
I spent New Year in Paris once which was fun, pretty vibrant...we went out for dinner, had a few drinks and stuff, atmoshpere was great!

The best New Years Eve I spent was the last one in Honduras. In an open walled beach bar with a cold beer and warm weather, a small crowd of people. Beautiful. Everywhere I have been in North America has just been over-crowded, cold and over-priced.

I've just spend an excellent New Years in Panama City. We had no plans what to do until lunch time on the 31st and then didn't even stick to the plan. Personally, I believe New Years can be great anywhere if you are with a good bunch of a few people and don't have too high expectations of what it's going to be like. It's just one night of the year !

Best place to spend New Year is somewhere random and unexpected. We had a really great new year 2005 in Wanaka (where we never intended to be) in a fab bar with really great people we just met at random while new year happened.
