I may have found employment in either of these places in both ski resorts as a waiter. If you were to choose which is better from a first time traveller to Canada which has the more fun?
Also which is closer to Vancouver?

Whistler definately!!!!!!!!!
I worked in Whistler for 6 months and it was the most amazing time of my life, it is only 2 hours (drive) from Vancouver whereas I think Jasper is about a 14 hour drive.
Whistler has the most skiable terrain and is one of the top 5 resorts in the world!!!! The people there are fab and although a little expensive, the night life is amazing.
If you have any questions I will be more than happy to help.

I must make an argument for Jasper, even though Whistler is closer to Vancouver. In the short time that I stayed in Whistler, I found the whole place to be really - and I mean, really - commercialised and too touristy.

Jasper, on the other hand, is more nature-oriented and the people - I found anyway - were much nicer, more laid-back.

If you need to be near Vancouver, working in Jasper is also just a really good excuse to cross the Canadian Rockies more often. :) (and I totally suggest the train)
