jnw47 has indicated that this thread is about France

I'm studying abroad in Germany and each weekend I get to travel anywhere in Europe! Next weekend I don't know what to do but I'd like to go to a warm place, and I'm thinking southern France. What are good places that are more small town, quaint villages or islands, if any? Or is Nice/Marsailles the best option in the region? Thanks!

For a small, cool place, try Carcassonne, near Montpelier. The walled city is amazing - i think it's the oldest in Europe, and the town is on the Canal du Midi, which is beautiful.

Or Toulouse, the rose city, also beautiful, loads to do - music, art, museums etc.... people are really friendly, food is good, lots of history....

enjoy!

Nice is beautiful!

For a small towns, I went to Portoferraio and Collioure. But they might be too small for you, they really thrive in the summer time.

Nice captured a part of me. I was just there in October, and it was warm, but not sunbathing weather. It would be a wonderful place for a weekend away!

And just my personal opinion....Marseille was dirty and crowded and overall very unimpressive. In fact, I know that a couple of cruise lines are cancelling their calls into Marseille because of problems with passengers getting mugged. I followed maps (ones provided by the tourist boards) to what they said was a spice and herb and vegetable market....all I found was hookers!!!

Whatever and wherever you go....ENJOY!!

I confirm Carcassonne, simply beautiful. It's true Marseille is not good to see everywhere or at anytime but Nice is also not so fine..to me,of course.

And don't forget to have time in the country side, all north provence is so cute!

Jeremy,
I would recommend Nice as a place to relax for a couple of days. I went last July and enjoyed three hot summers days wandering the promenade des Anglais and the shops. It's perhaps not the most exciting place, but a perfectly good place to spend a weekend, and we felt quite safe even wandering the streets with our bags in the evening when we arrived.

Ohh Carcassonne. As Mida said, thats a good place to go!

Get lost in that area, there are several cities around to go see.

Carcassonne is amazing. I went there last summer for a few days. I stayed at the HI hostel which is inside the old city and pretty nice. I went to see the jousting, it was a very different experience.

Cannes is a beautifull city with a Star-boulevard and also Monaco can be nice. It all depend how much money you want to spend. Both places can be very expensive.
