This thread is marked as being about Germany

Does anyone know roughly how much damage to my wallet a bus ride from Berlin to Leipzig would do? I'm guessing Germany isn't one of those countries that is cheaper to travel around by train but if I'm wrong please let me know...

You can look at (In several languages) and type in the trip to find a price. I looked and it depends on a few things how much you will pay. I saw from about €26, but make sure you know which of the stations in both towns you are going from.

... and how soon you need the ticket. If you can book your ticket via internet at least 2 weeks ahead stating exactly which train you are going to take, you can get as much as 60% off the regular price (=the price you pay if you walk up to ticket couter 15 minutes before the train leaves the station).

I generally do not like to support the German Bahn, because they are ridiculously over-priced
A cheap option to get to Leipzig is a private train company called inter-connex (unfortunately their website is only in German) which leaves once daily from three train stations in Berlin. If your flexible, here are the times:
Berlin Lichtenberg (5.52 pm)
Berlin Hohenschoenhausen (6.07 pm)
Berlin Schoenefeld Flughafen (6.26 pm)
You pay for the ticket (16 Euro one way, 30 % off if you're under 26) on the train and I found it a very convenient way to get to Leipzig in only two hours.

Cheers for the replies,

All very helpful so thanks very much. My basic german, and help from the folks in the hostel, got myself and the good lady a lift to Leipzig with the car sharing thing. €8.50 each, much better than the €72 to go by train with deutsche bahn.

Thanks again
