hi, i am really interested in going to costa rica soon but im a budget traveller and heard its expensive to travel around the country. has anyone any idea of day-to-day general costs? also heard there's loads of activities to do so that'll inflate the cost!
Costa Rica is more expensive than surrounding countries like Guatamela or Panama. If you are looking to make you dollar go farther, you might want to spend time in those countries and not as much time in Costa Rica.
When I was in Costa Rica, I was spending around $US 40 - $US 50 a day including buses, accomodation and food. As you said, activities add costs. You can get by inexpensively, though. I knew a guy who was going on $US 20 a day, and making it. Mostly, though, he was camping.
I was surviving on $15 a day, I had my own tent and I was cooking for myself. It is really easy to do, I insisted that I stay on a camp site so I could have a shower and toilet but if you are not to bothered you can just camp on the beach, no-one usually minds.
Also, if you live like that for a while you can spoil yourself every now and then and pay for a hotel, you feel like you are living like a millionare for $15 a night!!!!! Its well worth it!!!!
Also it is so nice to camp on the beach and wake up to see the sun rise over the ocean. Amazing!
hiya, thanks a lot its sounds awesome!!! bring it on! its nice to find somewhere where you can sleep on a beach without getting arrested!
the public bus system in costa rica is pretty cheap...25-50 cents (US$) i went surfing in the nicoya coast (pacific coast), in a town called, santa teresa. as a backpacker, you can find places there for $10/night, i enjoyed my stay @ a place called, the funky monkey lodge, the have a website, type in mal pais in your google search. fun surf town, friendly locals. montezuma was also another nice place with both expensive and inexpensive accomodations, but just remember, the weekends are always a bit higher in price.
