Hi folks

I will be leaving for my RTW trip in 9 weeks and was wondering if i should book my first couple of nights stay at each destination. Is this the done thing or do you book just the first day or the first week.

I am spending a week in both Fiji and the Cook Islands and not too sure whether to pre-book or just book a couple of night?

Any advice much appreciated!!!

It comes down to personal prefernce. I rarely don't bother at all, although at the start of long a trip (first destination) or after a long journey, i often try and book the first night or two, just as i'm not always in the greatest state and want something easy. I never book the full period - except if i'm heading to some really popular place at a specific time. i.e. oktoberfest in Munich, Bulls in Pamplona) as it gives you extra flexibility. I've never had a problem extending my one night booking to, in cases 10 days, if i've really liked somewhere, whilst only having 1 booked gives you flexibility to move if you don't like it/you find better.

I booked the first place I stayed on my trip, but that was mostly cause I knew I would be arriving around midnight and it really didn't sound appealing looking for accomodation then...

Thanks peeps!!!

Im just so worried, this is my first solo trip, my first backpacking trip, my first real adventure, and i think maybe i should just book my first night (at least) in each place so that i dont have to worry when i get there.

Have you never been stranded with nowhere to stay?

Thanks again!!

The only time I have run into problems with accomodations is either:

  • When I arrive later in the evening (after 5pm or so), in which case things have filled up, and you don't really want to be wandering around looking for places any way; or...
  • When I arrive at some place during a big festival or other event

Otherwise, I haven't had a problem. As others have said, I usually book the first night after a long journey, just so I know I don't have to worry about after stumbling off a 12 hour plane ride.

I dont bother really, I prefer to check out the accomodation situation once I get there!!!I agree with Gelli...if Ive been on a super long flight or Im on a flight that gets in late at night I tend to book my first night just so I know I have somewhere straight to head when I arrive!!!
The places you are going arent so obscure so you should be able to fins places to stay easily!!!But I say if its you first time travelling and youre going it solo, maybe book your first night before you arrive just to put your own mind at rest!

I think Im gonna book my first (maybe 2) nights stay at the first couple of destinations, maybe after that I'll be brave enough to just "go with the flow" like you guys ;)

Thanks again!!!
