Can anyone help?
We are driving the south of Italy. We have hired a car for 7 days, can anyone suggest some places to visit between CORTONA and SICILY? Preferably on the west side and centre of Italy...We will be traveling in Late June...is this the high season or medium season?
Rome and Napoli are nice city's and you might want to Palermo. Palermo is on a island but easy to go to.
The extreme south point, the village is called Santa Maria di Leuca, the view is AMAZING,cause you have sea almost 360 degrees around, and the village is so cute.Late june is not exactly the high season yet,but don't expect to be alone... good trip!
usually June and September are considered low season, (in the big city, f.e. Rome, is different), but there aren't precise criteria about that.
A few suggestion ither than the biggest cities would be the Amalfi coast, Capri and the other islands, Cilento coast 1 hour southern (Palinuro, Maratea, Santa Maria di Castellabate), Matera (the city where Mel Gibson shot "the Passion"), Puglia region.
Near Battipaglia, not far from Napoli stop in the cheese factories, where they do the best mozzarelle ever. One of these factories sells mozzarelle to the British crown and worldwide.
I would suggest to stop in other famous places in Sicily, and why not, if you can, make a trip of a couple of days to Malta taking ferry in Catania.
I reply to your question about what to see in calabria, suggested by my friend:
TROPEA and the surrounding natural area, called capo
VATICANO (nothing related with Vatican State, in rome )
LA CERTOSA di Serra San Bruno,
REGGIO CALABRIA , the seafront and the archeological museum (where are preserved the "bronzi di Riace"
GERACE little historical centre (in the ionic coast)
from reggio calabria and from messina (sicily) you can also take the fast ferry boat to Eolie Islands, (which are nice and pretty expensive)
TINDARI (famous church and amazing view)
TAORMINA (greek theatre and the view over Etna volcan)
Thankyou everyone for these fabulous suggestions. We will look into all these places mentioned.
A special thankyou for Laura for contacting your friend regarding Calabria.
also thankyou to "Caesar" for the suggestions of travelling to Malta..We have been so infatuated with Italy we keep forgetting about the neighbouring countries that are relatively close.
Maybe Cefalù in Sicily. I've never been there but i heard that it's a beautiful place
I agree with caesar about Cefalù (sicily), I visited twice.
