I have heard great things about Laos.
I know of two places Luang Prabang and Vientine which i will be going too.
Also very keen on doing the tubing which allot of ppl do and rave on about.. it sounds like so much fun.
Any great places or must do's, recommendations.. let us know.
would 8 days be enough to see and do? or would it be cramming allot in?
let us know... any feedback would be appreciated.
I would start in Vientiane. You can discover the city easy in a day. The main two attractions (Patuxai and the big gold thing (can't remember the name, it's next to the National Assembly) are along the same road and after that there isn't much else to see!
Catch a bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng (4 hours and go by mini-bus) It is the place of tubing (nothing quite like it) and is great fun. There isn't much in the town as all the activity takes place in the surrounding area. You can do white-water rafting, climbing, caving, kayaking. In the evening Xayoh Bar seems to start things moving before everyone tends to hit the Island Bar around 23:00/Midnight. How long you stay here is up to you, I was there 5 days!!
You can then catch a mini-bus from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang (4 hours). Two days is probably enough to see the sights (Buddhist Caves, Waterfall, Royal Palace) and there is a good night market that opens up in the main street from about 18:00. Then you can get a bus back to Vientiane to leave again.
Hope this gives you a good idea of things.
I planned on 2 weeks and stayed a month. Great country, great people but time moves verrryyy ssloowlly so don`t make an ambitious intinerary if u are headed there for only 8 days you`ll find yourself frustrated and disappointed.
Also, I was there 4 years ago and not sure if much has changed but there were no ATMs then so stock up on US$$.
It depends what kind of place you like but I'd say 8 days wasnt nearly enough. The first time i went I stayed about 12 days and did the usual Vientiane, LP and Van Vieng, the second time I stayed a month and went way up north (hill tribes and trekking, few tourists and a grand experience of travelling Laos-style) then we headed way down south to the islands and swung lazily in hammocks over the mekong. Bliss. When in LP don't miss the Kuang Si waterfalls - paradise!
