pifile has indicated that this thread is about Australia

We're planning on travelling along the Eastern Coast of Australia from Sydney to Cairns in July/August. We'd like to sail around Whitsunday Islands /Great Barrier Reaf by a yacht (3 days/2 nights - sleeping on board) starting from Cairns (not from Airlie Beach). Has anyone useful hints? Thanks!

There's plenty of boats that do overnight or extended trips, but few (if any) yacht charter options. My advice or an all round excellent time is to go to the Whitsundays. Plenty of Islands to call in at, and loads of and loads of boat charter options: you can charter your own or go with a crew of others. The boats range from ex-ocean maxi racers to smaller luxury yachts.

Cairns just isn't a sailing destination.

Sorry, my english isn't very well. We wanted to start from Cairns to the Whitsunday Islands an we're looking for a company which offers sailing trips. (We don't want to charter, just sail with a "guided" group from 8 to 12 persons on a nice and not to expensive yacht.)

I'm still not quite sure I understand... will you be travelling over land from Cairns to the Whitsunday Islands? There isn't much sailing in Cairns as majito mentions and I don't know of any companies that sail from Cairns to the Whitsundays. There's a LOT of companies that do sailing for two or three days in the Whitsundays. Prosail is probably the best known, but there are a lot of companies that offer this kind of trip.

Cheers,

Sam
ps. the Prosail website is a bit terrible, especially if you're on a decent browswer but their trips are a lot more professional!!!

Thanks a lot for your answers. I understand, that Cairns isn't the best starting point for a sailing trip. We just have the problem, that we're going from Brisbane to Cairns by a camper and our idea is to sail afterwards. For that reason it would be the best, if we could start the sailing trip from Cairns. But maybe we should looking for another solution.
