I would reccomend the Khao San Road area....great for backpackers, super cheap and great place to meet people!!!
I stayed in the Sian Oriental on all the occassions I ended up in Bangkok...280 Baht a night with your own bathroom! Its cheap clean and they have a fab restaurant downstairs!

Since you are very young you may be satisfied to stay in the Khao San Road area with other very young travellers. KSR is very popular with "backpackers."

You don't mention any amount you are willing to pay per night. Air Conditioned hotels in Bangkok can run from 650 baht on up to over 4000 baht per night. How much do you want to pay for one night in a hotel. Fan only rooms even cheaper.

My preferred area to stay in Bangkok is in the Siam or Sukhumvit Road area primarily because of the easy access to the Skytrain, overhead rapid transit system. The Skytrain can take you easy and cheap to many areas of Bangkok, including the bus station and subway. The Skytrain does NOT service KSR directly.

No matter what part of town you may stay in, taxi cabs are cheap in Bangkok. Only pay the meter price, it will be cheaper than bargaining, Tuk-Tuks will be more expensive than taxi cabs, unless you speak fluent Thai.
