I'd head about 3 hours drive/bus south to Byron Bay if I were you.... good place to learn to surf and great atmosphere. You'd have no problem picking up a board there either....

Cheers,

Sam
ps. if you do head there, try out Bay kebabs. Those things are phenomenal!

Head South to the Gold Coast. You'll see about 200 kilometers of surf beaches. Try Coolangatta, Tweed Heads, Byron bay. You'll find a surf beach. Or, head to the Sunshine Coast which is North.

And this website has surf cams on all good surf beaches in Australia. Click on QLD and choose a beach http://www.coastalwatch.com.au/contents/default2.aspx

I totaly agree head down to byron bay the atmosphere, as well as the surf is so much better than surfers paradise, i was on the gold coast for 10 days and on byron for 2 and i wish it was the other way around. Surfers just feels like any other tourist set up resort around the world.
