Hello!

I want take 4 weeks to travel down the coast from Hanoi to HCMC, then spend 3 months there doing volunteer work.

Does anyone know how I could go about getting a visa for this?
I know I can extend my 30 day visa for another 30days, but can I do this more than once?

Any help would be great!

You can extend your visa more than once, when you're being in Vietnam, I may sure.
Simple prepare passport, 02 4x6 photos and 24 $, you can extend once.
Wher you should go:
1. you can go to Immigration Office (81 Tran Hung Dao St, Hanoi). But i may sure you will have to spend more than that price (due to Vietnam administrative formalities).
2. Go to any travel agent in Hoan Kiem, you will pay only that price (they will have another way to get it for you, cheaper if you try negotiating)

Officially you can only extend tourist visa's once, for a maximum of 30 days. Any hotel/tourist agency etc will do it for you for about a dollar which will save you alot of time and hassle from doing it yourself. Some places take a couple of days to do it, but I got mine extended last week in about 4hours.

I've not yet come across anybody who has managed to extend more than once on a tourist visa, although its probably possible. It might be that you have to go to somewhere else for a few days(Cambodia / Lao / Bangkok etc) and get a new visa there. Doing that once with 2 extensions will give you 4months.

If you already have your volunteer place set up, talk to them - It might well be easier to simply apply for a longer stay visa with a letter from them

You don't need photos to extend, and i only paid 15usd.
