I was there a month ago and there was a petition there to protest against an MP who wants to reduce the number of coffeeshops there.

I was just talking to a local Dutchman and he has told me that it has never been legal in Amsterdam.

Just that under a certain amount is legal, and even if you are caught with more, all the police do is throw away the excess.

So from what I've heard its never been legal, just tolerated. But I have no idea about these new laws! I'm going back there in May, so guess I'll find out as well :)

i'm not exactly sure, but i believe that there are some place, streets etc where you are not allowed to smoke weed in public anymore, you can see that at the large signs with a red circle around it.

it could be that is completely illegal to smoke weed at the street, but i doubt that.

but i must say, we have a prime minisister who thinks weed is against the principles of good in this world, god is good, weed is bad, and some people gave too much trouble when they were stoned, so the people of amsterdam requested for a non smoking law..

in the normal touristic areas, i think you don't have any problems, but if a policeofficer comes to you and says it's forbidden, don't be difficult, if you just act normal and polite a lot chance that you just get a 'please don't do it again' instead of something more serious.

if you do cause a lot problems with it, it's possible the police it stricter.. but just don't worry, without the weed amsterdam wouldn't survive as a touristic town, even our pm knows that

okay.. it's not legal to sell drugs, execpt when you have a permit, but than you're not allowed to buy it from a supplier..
but smoking it, and owning it for own use, is legal so far i know

and we have the coffeshops for smoking and buying it (holland is the only place in the world where you can't get coffee in a coffeshop)

Dutch law states that using, possessing or trading any type of drugs is illegal in any place and at any time. It's that simple. Here comes the hard part. Since the Dutch are anarchist to some extent, they have the habit of questioning authority. Hence, there is a difference between theory (law) and practice (policy). In an effort to contain the "problem", the policy is to allow usage of cannabis only in certain designated places (i.e. inside the famous "coffeeshops") and under certain strict rules. Besides the coffeeshops, you won't be apprehended at home either, unless you grow marihuana for commercial purposes. Even a limited number of bars, discos and festivals condone smoke pot. Keep in mind though that this is uncommon and you are likely to be banned from most of the places. This has been the law and the policy for years now and will probably be the same for years to come. No recent changes were made and none are scheduled.

Enjoy! ;) :)
