backpacker hostels keeping records of guests

Why do you backpacker hostels and guesthouses keep a record of guests' passport numbers and issue/expiry dates?

I have no specific reason for asking, I'm just curious what these businesses do with my personal information after I check out?

I think in a lot of places they are required to do so by the police.

Well, thats what they tell you, but I'm sure its pretty legit cos pretty much everyone does it.

In a hotel in Battambang, Cambodia, the form asked if I had any guns or other weapons.

In a way I think its kinda of a good thing in case anything were to happen to you whilst you were away!Sometimes they can be a bit over the top and its when they try to keep a hold of your passport that it worries me, but its always good to have a record of who has been there and when, some people are dodgy so maybe its good they have a record of them also!

It is the requirement of the Police and by the government.
In India, for example,a copy of the list of the guests who stayed in every guest house /hotle/loding has to be sentto the Police everyday.
Such information collected by the Police for various reasons such as to check terrorists, persons wanted by Interpol, etc,etc..

Care is to be taken by the travellers not to submit or give the original passport to the guest house/hotels.Some hotels may take a photo copy of your passport and Visa which is ok.

Hello,

In Vietnam it's a normal thing. You are required to show your passport or to give hotel/hostel copy of your passport. Other service like renting motorbike, they gonna keep your passport until you turn them back. It's a kind of security and safe way

maybe the owners the kind who likes to know the different places from where people are visiting his / her hotel ...

on a more serious note - this is to prevent stolen passports from being recycled. if the cops want to check wether a stolen passport is being used / a passport which has been "artistically" altered in the expiry date field.

I know it´s a bit late but I can tell as hotel manager that in most of the countries it´s a police requirements to keep all passport details. As we get sporadic check on our file.
