I'm glad I asked the question now! Basically it sounds like I just need to watch out for the little buggers and not panic if I see one crawling up my leg.

I'll only start to panic if I get bitten!

Agree - huntsmans are the scariest looking, they look like your worst spider nightmare, but they don't do anything. When I was working on a flower farm in queensland the place was infested with st andrews cross spiders which are very pretty but can apparently give you a nasty poisonous nip. Not that i got bitten, nor had the any of family that lived there.

Years ago I was in my car on the way to an exam, and this mother of a huntsman was on the roof of my car and made it's way down the windscreen (on the outside of the car).

Needless to say, it scared the crap out of me.

Luckily, there was an old pizza carton in the back of my car and I pulled over and lured it onto the carton and threw it out.

I always knew that it pays to keep a pizza carton in the back of your car

LOL

I read somewhere that on average every person eats 3 or 4 spiders during their sleep in a normal lifetime. Kind of a neat little fact, no idea whether it is true or not :)

There's nothing to worry about with spiders here in Australia. I've lived here 23 years and have never been bitten. Frabkly that's probably because I've lived in Sydney all my life, but you really don't need to worry. The only two deadly spiders are the redback and the funnelweb. The redback poison will kill you slowly, the funnelweb's will kill you quickly (like within two hours). Most hospitals have antivenom on hand though so you'll survive.

If you're staying in urban areas you'll be fine. If you're going out into the country just make sure you know how to properly bandage up a spider bite before you go (this works the same for snake bites too!)

Our first encounter with a spider was a Huntsman that was in my room in Bondi - luckily the one guy we shared the house with was still awake so we called him to get rid of it! His face was a picture when he came into our room with a swagger, thinking me and my mate were just being silly over a small little thing and then he saw the size of it!! Had to get a saucepan to get rid of it and woke the rest of the house up with the nervous laughter!! But that was the only major incident in the year we were there - did check shoes when we were camping though!

Think it did me good though - by the end of the year I went from being a wreck in the corner to calmly getting a glass and paper and throwing them out the door!!
