Hiya,

Going Australia with my boyfriend the 1st June for a year! Tickets are booked and paid for. cant wait. Not sure how much money to take though. Do you think 6k will be enough for us both? We are willing to work out there.

Thanks

I am by no means an expert on Australia, but I am planning on visiting there for about a month. Most of the research I have done has said to expect to spend about $1200US per month, but I suppose if you found a deal on an apartment, and did get a job, you may be alright, but I would suggest a bit more than 3000 per person... Hopefully someone here can suggest a more appropriate number...

hi,

I came to Australia in 2000, and i had 5,000 AU$. i travelled for three months, the rest i had to work... and i was backpacking all over, not hotels.... the only thing, i bought 3 plane tickets for 600 dollars.... but i suggest, you save as much as possible, because you never know.... it could be you need an emergency, or if you can't, get a credit card....

good luck!

Its plenty as long as your prepared to work within 3 months of living and travelling there, you will have to work at some pioint and gives you a great taste of aussy life.

I took 2k a few years back and spent it in 3 months, but what a 3 months it was. :), I then worked for 5-6 months and travelled for the remaing 3-4 months.

That's nearly $14,000 Aussie dollars, or about the price of a return Sydney - London first class ticket with Qantas.

There's a budget guide here that may help http://www.studyworkandtravel.com/html/templates/budgetguide.htm.

However, say it was costing you $50-$60 a day each to live including an room in an apartment. That's $420 per week each or rounded up about $2000 a month each so $4,000 a month. if you worked and pulled in $500 each a week.......well, I think you're going to be ok. If you don't work and just start travelling your costs will be much the same unless you buy a van and live in it.

And there's always plenty of fruitpicking work along the way.

Have a great trip!

I have to agree with the last poster. You should take at least AU$50 per person per day.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your comments/suggestions, very helpful. Just have to see how it goes when we get out there i suppose. Not too worried about doing the whole year thing, at least six months would be great!!
