I am stopping by Kota Kinabalu en route to the Philipines. Does anybody have recommendations as to how many days to spend in KK? If I don't plan on climbing Mount Kinabalu, then is it even worth spending time in KK?

Thank You.

hey,
i went over to KK last summer and then climbed mt kinabalu, if your going purely for the city then my suggestion is dont bother as its nothing special...but you can go on some amazing excursions, if your into white water rafting we went on a wicked trip leaving from KK which was brilliant! we went with a company called 'riverbug' riverbug@traversetours.com and if your looking for a hostel the BEST i have EVER been in (in the lower budget range) is in KK called North Borneo Cabin, i think they have it on this website.
hope this helps, just ask if want any more info
Nat

Well, I would say that it is not worth it coming to Sabah without going to mount Kinabalu. Your journey is not complete! Try to arrange to climb. That maybe your only experience in a lifetime.

However, if you just want to wander around Kota Kinabalu, you can go to the island aroud. Very nice place indeed;)

I agree with Kat. Without climbing or some sort of outdoor excurisions, KK is pretty dull, not all that cheap and the sightseeing, eating and nightlife options leave a little to be desired.
Outside the city is where the beauty is.

I suggest that you just go chill out at the Karambunai Peninsula about 30 minutes drive from KK town. Only place to stay is the Nexus Resort and it's a posher place so a bit more expensive. However for that you get almost the whole beach to yourself.

Went walking for a day at the Mount Kinabalu Park but stayed in Karambunai most of the time. I loved it.

Karambunai Peninsula about 30 minutes drive from KK town.

plenty of activities in just one place and bit different community compared to what KK really is..heaps of tourists. overall loved it & the beach's fantastic.

Loads to do around KK - but really not worth spending any time in the city itself. Recommend climbing the mountain. You can catch a boat out to the islands just offshore which make up a national park, well worth spending some time there.

The only good thing about KK is the food, there are some truly fantastic places to eat. There's a great fish place down on the front (I forget its name) where they keep all the fish alive in tanks and you point out the one you want and they cook it for you. Nice...

Other than that though, KK's not up to much. But Sabah's great, loads you can do in the area around if you've got time.

Matt, besides KK, Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, and other small areas in KK such as Gunung Emas (abandoned wooden houses on the tress?), Tambunan (feel the REAL long houses and playing with the piglets in the muds!!!Wawooo...) and scenic natural landscape in Kundasang, too romantic to take a snapshot of the Mount KK from below.

Memorable...
