How easy/plausible is it to hitchhike around Ozzie? I will be heading south to north along the east coast in a month, and am trying to avoid buying bus tickets. Is it safe to hitchhike? Is it even possible to get around like that?

It is totally possible to hitchhike in Oz. We dont really get too many stories about hitchhiking abductions, but I still would avoid it if possible.

If you are coming from the US, you will have a fairly strong exchange rate and therefore would be able to afford bus/train fare's.

However, If you are going to hitch a ride, the best bet is to stay on the main roads, and wave down the truck drivers. They are usually the ones that would pick up people and don’t mind the company! But again, I dont think that hitching a ride is the best option!

If I were you I would rent a car and drive yourself. Its fairly cheap to hire a car here and you could stop as you please and certainly get to see the best of Oz at your own pace (in a month).

Our bus and train systems are of a good quality and I would totally recommend that you choose the safer option.

Its actually illegal to hitchhike, but people do it all the time. Like chucking filthy cigarette butts on the ground.

Yeah, I'm not sure how easy it'd be. I suppose it'd depend on where you're hitchhiking. The distances are so huge between cities in some areas that you could get stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Unless you like walking hundreds of kilometres....
