SKR has indicated that this thread is about Iran

Hi there,

I'd be very grateful if anybody could confirm whether the border between Iran and Turkmenistan is currently open or closed to foreigners...i'm getting conflicting information from a few web sources.

Cheers !
Simon

Hi all,

Seen that quite a few people have looked at this question but as yet no answers, so though i'd let y'all know that apparently the border between Iran and Turkmenistan IS is currently open to foreigners and there are three border crossings though one of them is only accessible by road.

Hope that helps anybody else interested in doing this crossing.

Cheers,
Simon

Hallo Simon,

It was open in late August last year. Some guys went in from Azerbaijan and stayed a week before exiting south of Ashgabat with a UK registered (RHD) car. They had a bit of trouble getting in but nothing getting out. (Offically they entered through a border that is not open to non local traffic)

I left out Iran and crossed the Caspian to Tukmenbashi in a 15 hr journey in a rusty old Russian ferry. About 6 hrs of paperwork later we were in. (Exercise extreme patience and friendliness on entering/leaving as they have no trouble leaving you stuck on the border for 2 days as I discovered!!)

Petrol really does cost 1 dollar for 60 litres!! We got done and paid 60 cts for a full tank!! However you do have to pay a subsidy on entering the country. (Not much!!)

Are you taking a car or hitching?

Sorry - I can't find an Edit button! Obviously the guys entered from Iran and not Azerbaijan as I wrote above.
