Hi,
I don't know why that would be any busier than any other time. Peak season for Hong Kong is in the fall. May is pretty nice, but you may have to dodge the rain at time though it's not yet the full out rainy season. Don't know about Beijing at that time - went there in June and it was not overly crowded or too busy. We are going back to China sometime in April/May and I'm not concerned about the timing. It might be busier in Beijing just because the weather is nicer then...

Good Luck!
Martha

mdancy, please note that the 1st week of May is Labour Day holiday week in mainland China. It's definitely not advisable to be travelling around in mainland China during this period! Avoid it at all costs if possible.

ariqe, it'll be more useful to start a thread of your own instead of latching on your posts to other people's. :)
Prices for accommodation are likely to be much higher in the 1st week of May in China. It's also much more difficult to get train/plane tickets, especially train tickets; don't expect any discounts for plane tickets. In addition, there'll be lots more people at the sights. If you can, try to arrive on/after 7th May instead. If you really can't, book all your accommodation as well as your train/plane tickets in advance to save yourself grief later.

If you have choice, don't travel in mainland China during May 1st to 7th. The week is the public holiday and you can experience one of the most crowded scenes everywhere.

Actually I think it is also one of the busiest season in Hong Kong during that week too, as many people will spend their holiday in HK shopping and visiting Disney. I highly recommend that you re-schedule your itinerary if possible.

Both Mainland and Hong Kong are very good destinations to visit, so enjoy your trip.
