Hi, everyone.

I know both of zoos are nice. If I can only go one, which one you suggest?

Thanks ahead.

Taronga zoo (Sydney). There's just something about a zoo looking out over the Sydney Harbour that adds a little extra :) Plus, their collection of animals is a bit more impressive in my recollection and I got the impression they do a lot more in terms of long term recovery programs as well. Don't miss their birds of prey show either; that is pretty spectacular!

I went to Taronga a few weeks back, and had a mild heart attack at the $30 entrance fee (per adult). It was a stinking hot day, and most of the animals were asleep! The performing shows are good, but if don't get there early you don't get a seat.

Probably a good day out for a tourist, particularly if you go by ferry from Circular Quay, but as a local I won't rush back.

Bring your money with you.

The Toronga zoo is a bit more prestigious than the Melbourne Zoo. The setting is really unbeatable. That said, the Melbourne zoo is not all bad either. There's a fantastic new elephant enclosure, which is kind of their main selling point these days.

I would actually suggest Healesville Sanctuary as the best option for visitors though. All the animals there are native Australian and the setting is really nice. A visit to the sanctuary can be followed up by dinner at the award winning Healesville hotel if you want to splurge (make reservations well in advance). They make some seriously nice food there! And there's some very nice wineries around the area as well. You need a car to go to Healesville though - it's about an hour out of Melbourne. But I think it's a worthwhile day trip.

Yeah, just make sure that there are elephants in the new state of the art enclosure. When we were there, it was empty! Apparently the elephants were "in transit". Pity they didn't mention that in the adverts!

Last time I went to Taronga Zoo a lot of it was under construction. It was still a great day, but all the empty half-finished enclusures kinda took away from the atmosphere. Granted that was about a year ago but still, check out how much of the Zoo is being fixed up before you go. Its better to see animals then construction equipment

Good suggestion. This place is really nice and they have a birds of prey show which arguably is as good, if not better than the one in Taronga. They also have a fantastic platypus viewing area which is really nice (those animals are just the coolest to see swimming around). The thing that makes Taronga so great for travellers especially is the setting and the view back over Sydney CBD, but that being said, the animals and how they are presented is ten times better at Healesville. Plus they are all native Ozzie animals which makes for a really good day out!

I would say Taronga Zoo also, mainly for the amazing view. Melbourne Zoo is a little more tucked away. But if you were to talk aquariums.... Melbourne has a far better one than Sydney`s :)
