No coat (unless you plan on trekking in the high mountains of the NW) ! A fleece or something for evenings will be fine. South of Da Nang (Hoi An is about 30km south), i never wore anything more than t-shirt and shorts. In Hue and Hanoi, t-shirt and shorts or sometimes trousers, with a thin long sleeved top in the evenings. In Sa Pa i did wear my fleece some of the time, but only in days when the weather came down.

I'm currently in Hue (breaking my trip back to Hanoi and China), having spent the last 6 weeks or so heading from Sa Pa in the extreme North to Saigon. And it's damned hot there.

Addition - Now back in hanoi and it's a tad chillier than it was before (and admittedly, i'm probably feeling it more having come from sweltering south). You don't need a thick coat or anything, but a warm fleece/jumper is useful!
