Went to see Tsotsi yesterday. Excellent movie!! I sobbed at the end. Has anyone else seen it? It totally deserved the Oscar. Great sound track too! How would you qualify the music though - South African Hip Hop? But also sounds a little like regaetton. I'm going to have to download it today!

Saw the preview for it, looks great... is it in video already?

Hi Mtgal

the genre of music is kwaito..

Thanks aelric! Never heard of kwaito music before, but I love it! Is it popular in South Africa? Can you recommend some popular artists?

It's straight out of the townships.. purely South African kinda rap styled music.
I'm not to clued up on who the popular guys are at the moment...
but will try find out for you.

offhand i think if you can find them overseas.. look for
1.Mandoza and
2.Mafikizola (appears on one of the songs on the album)
3.Zola (he is on the soundtrack album and most of the songs are his)

but i'll try find you some more names..

there is also quite a bit of Vusi Mahlasela, which is more Jazz orientated. You should definitely be able to pick up Vusi's stuff at any decent jazz cd shop.
