Yosemite consists of a long valley surrounded on the north and south side by giant mountains. On the north side is the famous granite cliff called "El Capitan". You can "google" this and get lots of pictures. Just east of this is the Yosemite Falls. On the south side of the valley is the "half-dome" mountain peak, which you can also hike to if you are up to the climb.

The valley floor itself is quite dramatic and has a few gorgeous meadows that feature cool weather and beautiful flowers. Lots of pine trees are everywhere--and it's just a peaceful, calm place.

The pass on the east side of Yosemite is only open from May to September--so don't plan to get there except from the west side if you go sometime besides our summertime.

The only hotel in the valley is the Ahwahnee, although there are lots of hotels calling themselves "Yosemite Hotels, Yosemite Motels, Yosemite lodge, etc.--none of which are actually in Yosemite so don't get confused.

Here's the website for the Ahwahnee Hotel--which gives you an idea of what it is like in Yosemite both in summer and winter:

Yosemite is probably the third most visited National Park in the United States. #1 is Grand Canyon, and #2 is Yellowstone.

It's about 170 miles east of San Francisco and about 220 miles north of Los Angeles (these are just rough estimates). It's not too far from the Sequoia and King's Canyon National Parks, which are best known for their giant redwood trees--so you can arrange to visit these on one day and Yosemite on one day if you wish to.

I hope you enjoy your trip. My sister arranges a stay every year at the Ahwahnee, so maybe you'll run into her and her husband while there.

Expect: magnificent nature, breathtaking views, inspirational experiences, and unique mysticism.

Don't expect: being alone, peace and quiet, short wait any where in the Park, finding a campsite without prior reservation, cheap accommodation, and having lots of money left. These things are true particularly during the summer months and when school kids (including college) are set lose.
