London to Edinburgh by train????

Travel Forums Europe London to Edinburgh by train????

We were thinking about going to Edinburgh from London by train. I know that it takes about 5 hours but I was thinking if there were nice/good places to stop on the way that might make the trip more bearable!

Does anyone have any suggestions of places that we could stop to see on the way?

Do you think its better if we just find a cheap flight?

I've done that trip; London Kings Cross to Edinburgh. I did it in one go, so I can't recommend any good stops, but it did pass through Newcastle and that might be worth a look.

I wouldn't be surprised if a cheap flight took as long as the train once you take the time travelling to Gatwick/Luton into account, then the normal time that you have to arrive before departure, then the fact that the plane will be late.

If you are not in a hurry, get the train. It'll probably take between 6-12 hours depending on what the weather is like and what is being done to the track on the way up. I used to do the western line from London to Glasgow (but it goes on to Edinburgh) which was always a nightmare if you are needing to get in on time. But if you're not in a rush then it's a very pleasant trip. I don't understand that you want to stop. Do you mean for a day? If you get a ticket from london to Edinburgh you won't be able to get off half way and then get on with the same ticket, you'll need to buy a new one. Which is goning to be expensive!

Agree with Peet
the cost to stop is not worth it I think. Newcastle is not so nice either. The train on GNER is 5-6 hours - the western line is much longer. flights are cheaper but may be just as long with the trains to the airports etc.

If ur lookin for a chance to see England on ur way up here - try York for a stop over. Its about 3 hours from Edi.

I second that, York IS nice.

Durham would be quite nice for a night too.

Fly, it's just not worth the hastle of the trains.
If by some unknown reason you do decide to train it.
York is great,
Newcastle is work a gander at.

Believe it or not the train is the quickest and cheapest way to get from shitty london to beautiful edinburgh. It only takes 4.5 to 5 hrs and goes along the coast which is quite beautiful. Book your ticket in advance so it is even cheaper. I got a ticket for 14 pounds. The train finishes off by going through a wee tunnel and then your are at Waverley station with a beautiful view of that spectacular castle. Don't stop its not that far if you must then stop at york but just go the whole way. You will love Edinburgh

I have done that trip many times! Its easy enough to do the trip in one go but if you have the time to stop, York is lovely! Durham is lovely too but very small! And I would also recommend Newcastle! If your not in a hurry, you may as well see as much as you can!
